Jewelry, Enameling, Lapidary and Sculpture Classes
Beginning students are encouraged to take Introduction to Jewelry: Fabrication Basics, but may sign up for any other class listed as entry level or beginning level. After taking Introduction to Jewelry, students are able to take any Intermediate or Jewelry II classes, unless otherwise specifically indicated.
Free open studio is Friday afternoons from 1:30-4:30pm for currently enrolled students.

Introduction to Jewelry: Fabrication Basics

Enameling: Introduction to Advanced
Instructor: Jewel Clark
- Enameling is the ancient art of fusing ground colored glass to a metal surface.

- Students will learn the basics of enameling: metal prep, sifting, enamel chemistry, and firing.
- Specific techniques include: stencils, wet-packing, raku, basse-taille and more, such as cloisonne, foil, separation and crackle, as the pace of the class allows.

Marriage of Metals: Patterning and Inlay

- In this class students will learn to create beautiful pieces of sheet metal combining different metals.
- Marriage of metals is a technique of merging two or more different metals.
- Techniques covered also include puzzle inlay, lamination inlay, patterning, solder inlay and wire inlay, which are ways to use multiple colors of metal that appear to be all one piece.

Precious Metal Clay

Etched Pattern with Salt Water

- Beginning to advanced level class.
- Learn how salt water and a “D” battery can be used to etch copper or brass.
- Learn to use PnP or plain laser copies as your patterns.
- Focus will be on creating sheets with etched textures for use in fabrication projects or to use as patterns for roller printing silver.
- The etch is deep and without undercuts, so is perfect for roller printing sharp images.
- Primary tools will be hot irons or griddle, small etching set-ups using salt water and “D” batteries.
- Copper /brass will be used for etching material, this set-up does not etch silver.
- There will be a kit fee for the etching set-ups. Students will take their etching stations with them for home use.

Stone Setting: Bead Setting Faceted Stones

Workshop: Precious Metal Clay- Birdhouse Pendant
Instructor: Lyle Rayfield
- Beginning to Advanced level class. Some experience with metal clay is beneficial but not required.
- This workshop provides students with skills and techniques for metal clay box construction in the form of a fanciful miniature home for an imaginary feathered friend.
- Decorative embellishments will then be added to individualize the house design. Once fired, the pendant can be given a high shine or patinated with Liver of Sulfur.

Workshop: Precious Metal Clay- Copper and Silver Combo
Instructor: Lyle Rayfield
- Beginning to Advanced level class. Some experience with metal clay is beneficial but not required.
- Come learn how easy it is to work with the new quick fire copper clay and how to embellish your pieces with silver clay “rivets.” Unlike the original copper clays, this new product can be torch-fired, which eliminates the need for a kiln and the use of messy carbon and flaky stainless steel containers.
- In the first half of this workshop, you’ll make a focal piece (or two) using quick fire copper clay. After the copper is fired, you’ll learn how to add silver clay embellishments using a hot rivet torch-fire technique. Don’t miss out on this fast, fun, and easy way to make mixed metal jewelry.

Workshop: Metal Clay- Caning and Other Mixed Metal Designs
Instructor: Lyle Rayfield
- Beginning to Advanced level class. Some experience with metal clay is beneficial but not required.
- This class focuses on using multiple metal clays to create intriguing patterns of mixed metal whirls and swirls. You’ll get hands-on experience with powdered metal clay combinations of bronze, copper and pearl gray steel. Come learn how to create unique designs using an extruder and other stacking and rolling techniques to produce stripes, wood grain, and Mokumé Gané effects. Discussion and demonstration cover techniques for successful forming, joining, repairing and finishing your mixed metal creations.

Blacksmithing: Making Steel from Black Sand: Tama Hagane
Instructor: Frank Christensen
- Beginning to advanced level.
- Learn the tama hagane process to make your own patterned steel. Take iron that you gather, under high heat add carbon to the iron melting together to form an ingot. Follow up with repeated folding and pressing.
- Students will gather their own black sand from the desert landscape for their own custom made steel on a field trip with instructor Saturday, January 15.
- Students will learn how to shape the steel into billets or blades.
- Projects will be finished with a final etching treatment revealing the beauty of the multi-layer pattern unique to this process.

Foundry: The Human Form

- Limited to six students
- Professional sculptor, Matt Smith, has spent a career building figures of all kinds of art and industry.
- Learn all the steps to sculpting human form: building maquettes, working with a model, building an armature, proportion, composing, refining, and finishing.
- You will learn how to build molds for your models.
- NOTES: Sculptures will be cast in resins and plastics. Painting and patinas will be taught for a final finish. Students will share the cost of a model during the initial sculpting phase.
