ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory and ESSENTIAL. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of every class. YOU MUST STAY FOR THE ENITRE CLASS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE DAY. You have 2 free unexcused absences. Each 2 unexcused absences beyond that will reduce your attendance grade one letter. Excused absences should be verified with a doctor’s note or other appropriate documentation. Excused absences include serious illness, religious holidays, family emergencies, intermittent work conflicts or sanctioned school activities. DO NOT SCHEDULE DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS DURING THIS CLASS. Please feel free to ask to see your attendance status at any time and if you come in late make sure I put you down as present. Habitual tardiness will result in the lowering of your attendance grade. Three late arrivals (20 minutes or more) will equal one absence so COME ON TIME AND READY TO WORK! If you are having difficulty attending or meeting other requirements for this class, please talk to me to see if we can work something out to help you. Keep me in the loop! I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s going on.
TOPICS
This class is designed to teach you how to draw both technically and creatively. I do not expect you to know how to draw when you first come to class. Throughout the course you will practice drawing techniques and composition through assignments in and out of class using a variety of media.
GRADING
You will be graded on your class sketches, outside sketchbook, finished projects and attendance. Improvement from the beginning of the semester to the end will be a major consideration. These are the elements I will consider when grading your assignments: Have your technical and compositional skills improved? Did you complete projects on time and with the required criteria? Did you push yourself to be creative? Were you a positive force for yourself and others in the class? Did you participate in critiques by providing insightful commentary? Work is due ON TIME! If you do not turn in your work on time, I cannot give you a grade and you will not know how you are doing in the class. Late work will lose one letter grade for every week not turned in.
You should expect to work on some of your projects outside of class- especially the landscape, collaborative and self-portrait projects. I will give you a detailed handout for each project.

CRITIQUES
I cannot stress enough how important critiques are. It is one of the most fundamentally important parts of an art class. It is in critique that you can benefit from the objective and constructive views of your instructor and your peers and gain valuable insight into your process, technique and creativity. Critiques allow you to discover what you are doing well and what elements of your skill-set need improvement in a safe and constructive environment. Critiques are only ever meant as a means to help you succeed.

5 WEEK REVIEW
At the end of the first 5 weeks of the semester, I will hand you a questionnaire designed to help me refine my course curriculum. Please be honest and insightful. I can only improve your learning experience with your feedback!!!
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
You MUST come to class ready to work WITH YOUR MATERIALS! Coming to class without materials with which to work on the drawing exercises and assignments will result in a “late arrival” designation on your attendance grade for that day.
You MUST come to critiques with finished assignments or at the very least SOMETHING to put up on the wall for the other students to see. There will no exceptions except in cases of excused absences resulting in an inability to finish an assignment by the critique day. Failure to provide work for critiques will result in an unexcused absence for the critique day in your attendance record.
OUTSIDE SKETCHBOOK REQUIREMENTS
You must purchase a sketchbook that you will not mind traveling with or keeping at home for the outside of class requirements. You must make 2 drawings per weekend in your sketchbook. These drawings may be a cartoon, practice drawing, finished drawing or detailed “doodle” but it must fill the page and show some time and effort employing and practicing the techniques you are learning in the class.
MATERIALS
You will need to bring these materials to class every day unless otherwise announced
We will do many drawings in class. You must record on each drawing exercise:
