Metals and Jewelry Classes I will be offering workshops at the Phoenix Center for the Arts and the Mesa Arts Center in 2008. Please scroll down to view all upcoming workshops. Fused Link Chains Phoenix Center for the Arts
April 24- May 15 (4 weeks)Thursdays 1.00- 4.00 pm $55 Fused link chains have been made for thousands of years. They are also known as loop-in-loop chains because the sealed link is folded up on itself before the next link is slid through. Links are made from coils of wire, which are then cut and fused back together to start the chain. There are endless patterns and sizes from delicate airy chains to thick substantial cords. We will cover many patterns with the option of making multiple samples or focusing on finishing one or two long chains, as well as clasps and finishing. It is helpful if you've had some soldering experience but not necessary. Open to all levels. Students should expect to spend a minimum of $40 for materials depending on project choice. Email me for a materials list. Click here to go to the Phoenix Center for the Arts registration page or call (602) 262-4627 for more information.

November 18- December 9 (4 weeks)Tuesdays 6.00- 9.00 pm This class will cover woven chain making, also called crochet or Viking knit. Multiple patterns and finishing techniques will also be covered. This is a simple and infinitely variable chain technique to learn that produces an elegant piece of jewelry in its own right.
Introduction to Enameling Mesa Arts Center
September 10- October 15 (6 weeks)Wednesdays 1.30- 4.30 pm Enameling is the technique of fusing ground colored glass to metal. This introductory class will cover metal prep, cleaning enamels, sifting, bassetaille, sgraffito, stoning, painting, uses of foil and combining transparent and opaque enamels. As always, safety and proper working habits will be discussed and employed. Champleve and cloisonne will not be covered.
Mesa Arts Center
October 22- November 26 (6 weeks)Wednesdays 1.30- 4.30 pm Cloisonne enameling is the technique of applying ribbons of silver wire to a metal surface and filling the resulting "cells" with enamel . This technique mimics stained glass with its linear metal forms in the design. This class will cover all aspects of cloisonne technique- wet packing, making and using the wire, metal prep, stoning and finishing- and is designed as a continuation of Introduction to Enameling. If you have already had a basic class in enameling, you should find the class a great addition to your skill set. If you are a beginner, you might still find the class of value but you will get the most out of it if you already have some enameling knowledge.
For more information, please email me or visit the Mesa Arts Center to see a listing of current and upcoming classes. |
