Introduction to Jewelry: Fabrication Basics

  • Entry level class. Designed for beginners, but advanced students may wish to brush up on skills and learn new processes from a new teacher

Metalwork for Beaders

Instructor: Teri Jo Kinnison

6 weeks

  • Beginning to advanced students welcome.
  • Planned projects include:  headpins (plain and fancy), ear wires, simple clasps, jump rings and basic chains, lining larger hole beads with metal tubing
  • Learn to use common jeweler tools including hammers, pliers, files, jeweler saw, and a  small gas-air torch.  We will also cover how to modify common tools to make them work better for you
  • Learn the characteristics of common metals used for jewelry, and how to work with them to make unique elements for your bead-based jewelry
  • Basic finishing techniques and patina will be discussed
  • Bring your current hand tools and some beads to class.  NOTE:  bring beads you are willing to have damaged – not the goal, but a possibility
  • During the first class we will discuss what specific projects / skills participants want to learn.  If possible, the planned projects will be modified to include other items
  • We will not have time in this short class to learn soldering

Creating Cabochons: Beginning/ Intermediate

  • Create beautiful stones for jewelry
  • Here you will learn how to slice a pretty stone into slabs; then cut and polish them to make colorful cabochons for setting in rings, pendants or buckles
  • These skills are also great for adjusting previously created cabochons to improve their look and fit in your jewelry designs
  • Safe use of equipment and basic skill development will be emphasized

Precious Metal Clay

  • Entry level class.
  • Fine silver can now be shaped and worked like clay, then kiln fired and finished like cast silver.
  • Learn to work this new, high-tech material.
  • Use simple tools and hand manipulation to make rings, pendants, beads and small containers.
  • Once fired it can be worked further with traditional jewelry tools such as files and hammers.
  • Returning students are welcome to continue work on personal projects in an independent projects format.

Resin Jewelry: Mold Making and Casting

Instructor: Ashley Weber

 

  • Learn to create rubber molds and use pre-made molds to cast rings, earrings, bangles and pendants
  • Add three-dimensional, sculptural aspects to your work by molding and casting found objects and pre-existing pieces of jewelry
  • Add interest to your jewelry by using pigments, encapsulating memorabilia, etc. into your pieces

Hand Engraving on Metal:
Beginning and Intermediate

  • Join renowned gun engraver Dave Jones for this entry level class
  • The age old hammer and graver technique will be taught to give students greater ease and control in executing traditional designs
  • Students will learn the basics of engraving patterns on steel, nickel and aluminum. Silver is optional

Electro-Etching Metals for Patterned Surfaces

Instructor: Polly Smith

 

  • Learn how to enrich the surfaces of your jewelry and metalwork with beautiful designs
  • Etch any B&W image or photograph onto silver or copper
  • Electro etching is a reverse plating process using a rectifier for electrical current. Etching with this method preserves the resist and creates a deeper, cleaner etch than standard acid bath etching
  • Learn about safer etching acids and how to handle them
  • Workshop covers a variety of resists and methods of application including P-N-P

Vessels: Using the 50 ton Deep Draw Hydraulic Press

  • With the press of a button flat sheet can be formed into shapes that will create skillets and saucepans, vases, bowls and sculptural forms

Artistic Entrapment: Creative and Innovative Stone Setting

2 days

  • Level of experience required: this is an intermediate level workshop program. Participants should have general familiarity with basic jewelry tools, proficiency with saw and file, and experience with torch and flex shaft
  • Examine a diverse range of traditional and alternative solutions to capturing and setting objects in the creation of studio jewelry and personal adornments
  • Exploration evolves from a triangulation of concept, construction, and capture
  • Working from five traditional stone setting perspectives: bezel, prong, channel, tube,and tension mount, students devise modified adaptations that enable them to use these basic approaches in innovative new configurations
  • Primary emphasis of this workshop is on construction by metal fabrication, assembly by soldering and fusing, joining by cold connections and mechanical means
  • Skill sets include forging, forming, dapping, drilling, sawing, piercing, filing, fitting, and assembly
  • The practical exercises focus on project planning, precision layout and execution, and stone setting with simple tools, hammer and punch, pusher and pliers
  • Students are invited to bring cabochons, faceted stones, minerals, glass, metal, bone, pearls, and other objects to explore in the creation of settings
