Metal Basics for Beadwork

Instructor: Teri Jo Kinnison

4 weeks

  • Beginning to advanced students welcome.
  • Learn the characteristics of common metals used for jewelry, and how to work with them to make unique elements for your bead-based jewelry.
  • Learn to use common jeweler tools including hammers, pliers, files, jeweler saw, and a gas-air torch. We will also cover how to modify common tools to make them work better for you.
  • Basic finishing techniques and patina will be discussed.
  • Planned projects include: jump rings and basic change, headpins (plain and fancy), simple clasps, lining larger hole beads with metal tubing, and a bent wire brooch.
  • Bring your hand tools and some beads to class. During the first class we will discuss what specific things / skills participants want to learn. If possible, the planned projects will be modified to include other items. NOTE: bring beads you are willing to have damaged – not the goal, but a possibility.

Jewelry II- Multiples and Puffs with the Hydraulic Press

  • Learn to make items with shapes that have been “puffed out” without hammer marks.

Carved and Pierced Bezels

2 days

  • This two-day applied technique workshop focuses on the bezel as a self-supporting design element.
  • The basic bezel form is expanded upon in the creation of alternative settings where the common bezel is articulated into prongs, tabs, channels, serrated borders, and scalloped pattern designs.
  • Students work with fine silver to fabricate thick walled bezels which are further embellished with carved, filed, and pierced decorations.
  • Instruction covers techniques of forming, shaping and soldering, precision layout, execution of patterns and repetitive design elements, and setting stones with hammer and punch.

Flush Setting Faceted Gemstones

2 days

  • Flush setting is one of the quickest and easiest of all stone setting techniques.
  • This setting style allows embellishment using gemstones without incorporating an actual "setting" into the item of jewelry.
  • It literally takes only minutes to set a stone using this approach.
  • The technique derives its name from the table of the gemstone being level or "flush with" the surrounding metal.
  • In this workshop, we will focus on the flush setting application for small round stones in both straight and graduated sizes.
  • It is appropriate for both beginning and intermediate level stone setters. Practical exercises will be done in      copper, brass, and find silver with synthetic gemstones

Blacksmithing: Damascus Steel for Knives or Jewelry

  • Using a coke forge and hydraulic press, we will forge weld up to 232 layers of 1084 and 15N20 type steels, to make a random pattern Damascus billet.
  • Students will learn how to shape the layered billet into a small knife or flat sheets suitable for making jewelry.

Computer Aided Design

CAD: Computer Aided Design

  • The program Solidworks is the primary program used in the class
  • Student edition software available. Approximate cost $90- 130
  • The program allows the students to design, shape and reshape their ideas with different materials, scales and revisions without potential waste of working with the materials themselves
  • The program allows for work with sheet metal, welding, and castings as well as other materials such as plastics
  • It also allows users to design molds around a computer generated object minimizing errors and waste when the molds are constructed
  • These skills translate directly into applications already being taught in the sculpture, jewelry and ceramics departments
